being an experienced horticulturist,
landscape contractor and
professional writer for various
gardening magazines in New York
City, decided to write his first book
on landscaping your property after
the builder leaves. Titled “Informal
Gardening” and published by
Macmillan Press in 1969, this book
can still be found on the internet. In
the book, my brother and three

I grew up in West Nyack, New York. I attended Avon Old
Farms prep school in Avon, Connecticut from 1969 to 1973.
After graduation, I enlisted in the United States Navy, serving
aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS
ENTERPRISE CVAN-65. I was an Intelligence Specialist
serving in the ship's Intelligence Center as a photographic
interpreter. During my three and one-half years aboard USS
ENTERPRISE, I made two overseas deployments to the
western Pacific. My first deployment involved participating
in Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon,
South Vietnam in the spring of 1975. My second
deployment was 1976-1977.
Upon discharge in January, 1978, I started my career in
landscaping, drawing on my experience through my years
growing up under my dad's guidance in horticulture. I
worked for various landscaping companies from 1978 to
1982. In California, I was employed by Jon Runley
Landscaping in Pleasanton, CA. and Banzai Landscaping in
Fremont, CA. Moving back to New York in 1982, I was
employed by Carl Rinne Landscaping in New City, NY and
Edwin Helmke Landscape Contractors in Spring Valley, NY.
We completed all phases of landscaping work included
athletic field construction and golf course construction.
Today, I'm very active in Orange County, NY veterans
issues. I am the Color Guard Chairman of Vietnam
Veterans of America Chapter 140 in Middletown, New York.
I was a member of VFW Post 1708 Goshen for twelve years,
being Post Commander for three terms from 1998 to 2006.
Currently, I'm the Commander and Membership Chairman
of VFW Post 5492 Pine Bush. I am a Life Member of both
organizations. I also serve on the Veterans Advisory Board
for Orange County, NY.
